How Thick Should Balustrade Glass Be? A NZ Homeowner's Guide

When homeowners start looking at glass balustrades, the thickness question comes up almost every time. You'll see 10mm, 12mm, 15mm and 19mm toughened glass quoted, and the price differences between them can be significant. So how do you actually choose? The short answer is that glass thickness isn't a style decision — it's a structural one, driven by the panel size, the fixing method, and the loads the barrier has to meet. Here's how to think about it.

Why thickness matters

A glass balustrade panel is a structural element. It has to resist wind, the weight of someone leaning on it, and the point loads the Building Code specifies. Thicker glass is stiffer and stronger, which means it can span wider, sit taller, and take higher loads without deflecting too much or risking failure.

Deflection — how much the glass bends under load — is a big part of the calculation. A panel that meets the strength requirement but bends too much under a person's weight still isn't right. Thickness is what keeps deflection within acceptable limits, which is why a taller or wider panel often needs to step up a thickness grade.

10mm toughened glass

10mm is the entry point for toughened glass balustrades and is common in framed or semi-framed systems where the frame and any handrail carry a good share of the load. It's also widely used for pool fencing, where the panels are typically shorter and the loads are lower than a high balcony.

For a residential pool fence on a flat site in, say, Browns Bay, 10mm toughened glass in spigots is often the right call — it meets the load requirements, looks clean, and keeps the cost sensible. It's not the choice for a tall frameless balcony barrier, where the glass alone has to take the top edge load.

12mm toughened glass

12mm is the workhorse of frameless balustrades. It's stiff enough for most residential frameless panels at standard heights, and it's the thickness you'll see on a lot of decks and staircases across the North Shore. The extra 2mm over 10mm gives a meaningful jump in stiffness and load capacity, which is what makes frameless systems viable.

If you're going frameless on a residential deck or balcony and the panel sizes are within the standard range, 12mm is usually where you land. It balances cost, strength, and a clean look without over-specifying.

15mm toughened glass

15mm steps up into heavier-duty territory. It's used for taller panels, wider spans, and frameless systems where the design loads are higher — for example, an exposed balcony on a multi-storey home in Herne Bay where wind loads are significant. The extra thickness keeps deflection under control on bigger panels.

You'll also see 15mm on commercial or higher-traffic residential settings where the barrier has to meet tougher load requirements. It's noticeably heavier to handle and install, which is part of why it costs more — not just the glass, but the installation time.

19mm toughened glass

19mm is the heavy end of residential balustrade glass and crosses into commercial specification. It's used for very tall panels, very wide spans, or barriers that have to meet the highest load categories — think a public balcony, a commercial staircase, or a high-rise deck. For most Auckland homes, 19mm is more than you need.

That said, there are residential cases where it's the right answer: a large frameless panel on an exposed coastal deck, or a feature balustrade where the architect wants a particularly tall, uninterrupted pane. It's a premium choice, specified for a reason, not a default.

Residential vs commercial loads

The reason commercial balustrades often need thicker glass isn't the glass itself — it's the loads. AS/NZS 1170 sets higher imposed loads for barriers in public or commercial spaces than for residential ones, because they have to withstand more people and more force. A 12mm panel that's perfectly adequate on your deck in Torbay may be under-specified for a restaurant balcony.

  • Residential barriers: lower imposed loads, 10–12mm often sufficient, 15mm for taller or wider frameless panels.
  • Commercial or public barriers: higher loads, 15mm or 19mm more common, often with engineered fixings.
  • Always specify to the load, not to a rule of thumb.

How to choose for your home

The honest answer is that glass thickness is a calculation, not a guess. It depends on the panel height and width, the fixing method (spigot, channel, framed), the fall height, and the design loads for the location. A reputable installer will work this out for your specific job rather than selling you a one-size-fits-all system.

If someone quotes a glass thickness without asking about the panel size, the fixing, and the fall height, that's a red flag.

For most Auckland homeowners, the decision lands on 12mm for a frameless deck or staircase balustrade, 10mm for a pool fence, and 15mm only where the panel sizes or loads demand it. The right thickness is the one that meets the code for your site at a sensible price — not the thickest you can afford.
