When people say 'the North Shore' they usually mean anywhere from Devonport through to Long Bay, and that's more or less where I work every week. The Shore is where most of our balustrade and pool fencing jobs happen, partly because so many homes here are perched to catch the sea view and partly because the renovation market is so active. If you're on the Shore, you're not far from a job I've done.

What ties the whole area together is the coast. Nearly every deck we fit a balustrade to is within sight of the water, which means the hardware has to be up to it. I won't fit standard interior-grade fixings on a Shore deck — they simply don't last. Everything we install here is specified for coastal exposure from day one.

Choosing the right system for a Shore deck

The system I recommend depends on the deck and the house. A frameless channel system is the cleanest option and works beautifully on a flat new deck. On an older deck where we're retrofitting, side-fixed spigots are often easier because we can fix to the existing edge without rebuilding it. For a more traditional home, an aluminium-framed glass balustrade in a powder-coated finish sits well and is forgiving of slight irregularities in the deck surface.

Pool fencing and shower screens across the Shore

Pool fencing is a big part of what we do on the Shore — there are a lot of family homes with pools here, and the council is strict about F9 compliance. We fit frameless glass pool barriers that meet the standard and still let you see the kids from the kitchen. Shower screens are the other regular job, especially in the newer townhouse developments where a frameless glass screen makes a small bathroom feel properly finished.
