There isn't a single 'glass balustrade' — there are a few distinct systems, and the right one depends on your budget, the look you're after, and how the deck or staircase is built. I'll walk you through each option on site, but here's the short version.

• Frameless channel system — glass slots into a slim base channel, no posts or handrail. The cleanest, most minimalist look.
• Spigot-fixed frameless — glass held by stainless steel spigots bolted to the deck or stair edge. Slightly more visible hardware but easier to retrofit.
• Aluminium-framed glass — glass panels inside a powder-coated aluminium frame with a handrail. The most cost-effective option and very robust.
• Side-fixed or top-fixed — depending on whether the glass fixes to the side or the top of your structure.

Glass balustrades in New Zealand aren't a free-for-all. Anything that acts as a barrier to a fall of more than one metre has to meet the NZ Building Code, and the glass itself has to be toughened to a specific standard. I handle all of this so you don't have to, but it's worth knowing what's behind the work.

• NZ Building Code clause F4 — safety from falling. Sets barrier height (typically 1 metre for decks, 1.1 metres in some cases) and the gap allowed under the barrier.
• AS/NZS 1170.1 — structural design actions. Sets the live and wind loads a balustrade must resist, including the 1 kN/m top edge load and the 0.6 kN point load for infill panels.
• NZS 4223 — performance of glass in buildings. Covers toughening, thickness, and how glass is rated for use in barriers.
• Glass thickness is calculated from the panel size, fixing method, and design load — most residential balustrades use 12mm or 15mm toughened glass, sometimes 19mm for larger spans.

The short version: your balustrade will be engineered to the right standard, signed off, and built to last. I won't install anything that wouldn't pass a building inspection.

Frameless glass balustrades typically range from $650 to $1,500 per linear metre installed, depending on the system — the channel system sits at the premium end up to $1,500 per metre, while direct-fix and side-fixed spigot systems sit between $650 and $950 per metre. Aluminium-framed glass balustrades are the most affordable glass option, typically ranging from $500 to $700 per linear metre. Prices exclude GST.

The final figure depends on the glass thickness, the fixing method, any corners or steps, the type of handrail if you want one, and how straightforward the site access is. A straight run along a flat deck in Murrays Bay is a different job to a curved staircase in a Remuera renovation — and I'll price both honestly once I've seen them.

• Free measure and quote — I come to site, measure up, and give you a fixed-price quote. Usually within 48 hours.
• Glass ordered and toughened to size — allow 2 to 3 weeks for manufacture.
• Site preparation — channel routed or spigot positions marked, depending on the system.
• Installation — most residential balustrades go in over 1 to 3 days depending on length and complexity.
• Clean-down and handover — glass polished, hardware checked, and you sign off the finished job.
