Glass Shower Screens Auckland

A glass shower screen is the enclosure around a shower — the door and any fixed side panels — made from toughened safety glass. It can be fully frameless (glass held by hinges and minimal hardware), semi-frameless (a slim frame around part of the screen), or fully framed. The door can hinge open or slide on a track, depending on the bathroom layout.

I fit shower screens right across Auckland — from new ensuites in Remuera renovations to main bathrooms in North Shore new builds — and the reason most clients go glass is that it turns a functional space into something that feels like a hotel bathroom. Done well, a frameless screen almost disappears and the room reads as larger and lighter.

The trade-off versus a fully framed shower enclosure is cost — frameless glass is the premium option. But in a bathroom renovation, the shower screen is one of the things you see every day, so most of my clients see it as worth doing properly.

There are a few ways to configure a glass shower screen, and the right one depends on the bathroom layout, the shower base, and how much you want to spend.

• Frameless hinged door — toughened glass door on heavy-duty hinges, no frame. The premium look.
• Semi-frameless hinged door — slim frame around part of the screen, glass door. A balance of cost and look.
• Sliding shower door — glass door on a precision track, ideal where swing clearance is tight.
• Fixed glass panel — a single fixed panel for a walk-in wet area, no door.
• Fully framed enclosure — glass in a full aluminium frame. The most cost-effective option.

Shower screens in New Zealand have to meet glass safety standards — because if a shower screen breaks, it breaks onto a person standing in the shower. That's why all the glass I use is toughened to a specific standard and rated for human-impact zones.

• NZ Building Code clause F2 — hazardous building materials. Glass in shower screens must be safety glass (toughened or laminated) because it's in a human-impact zone.
• NZS 4223.3 — human impact safety requirements. Sets the glass type and thickness for shower screens; toughened glass is the standard for shower doors and panels.
• AS/NZS 2208 — safety glazing materials. Covers the performance rating of toughened glass used in shower screens.
• Glass thickness — typically 6mm to 10mm toughened for shower screens, with 10mm or 12mm for larger frameless doors.
• Hardware — hinges and tracks rated for the weight of the glass door they carry.

Every shower screen I fit is built to the right standard and signed off. I won't install anything that wouldn't pass a building inspection.

Glass shower screens typically start from $900 for a semi-frameless hinged door, with fully frameless hinged doors from around $1,500 depending on the glass thickness and hardware. Sliding shower doors sit in a similar range. Fixed glass panels for walk-in wet areas are usually priced per panel.

The final price depends on the screen size, the glass thickness (10mm and 12mm cost more than 6mm and 8mm), the hardware spec, and whether the screen is frameless, semi-frameless, or fully framed. A straightforward rectangular screen in a Browns Bay new build is a different quote to a custom angled screen in a Herne Bay renovation — and I'll price both honestly after the measure.

• Glass toughened to size and hardware ordered — allow 2 to 3 weeks.
• Site check — tiles sealed, shower base or wet area ready.
• Screen fitted — hinges or track set, door hung and adjusted, seals fitted.
• Final clean, water test, and handover.

Most shower screen installs take half a day to a full day on site, with the full timeline from quote to handover running 2 to 4 weeks.

Glass shower screens are low-maintenance but they do need a bit of routine care to stay looking good. A squeegee after each shower stops water spots building up, and a wipe with glass cleaner every week or two keeps the glass clear. The hinges on a frameless door should be checked every year or so to make sure they're still running smoothly — a drop of the right lubricant is usually all they need.
