A frameless glass balustrade is exactly what it sounds like — a safety barrier made of toughened glass with no visible posts, no top rail, and no surrounding frame. The glass is held either by a slim base channel set into the deck or by stainless steel spigots bolted to the structure. From a distance, it almost looks like the glass is floating.

This is the system I install most often for homeowners in Takapuna, Herne Bay, and around the North Shore who've built or bought a property with a view and don't want anything getting in the way of it. It's also the option I reach for on staircases where a chunky handrail would interrupt the line of the stairs.

The honest answer is that frameless glass is the premium choice — it costs more than an aluminium-framed system, and most of my clients know that going in. What they're paying for is the look. There's no horizontal rail cutting across the view, no vertical posts breaking up the line, and the glass itself becomes the architecture rather than a barrier in front of it.

There are two ways to hold frameless glass, and the choice usually comes down to the structure underneath and the look you want.

If you're building a new deck, the channel system gives you the cleanest finish. If you're adding a balustrade to an existing deck or staircase in Browns Bay or Torbay, spigots are often the more practical route because they don't require cutting a channel into the structure.

Frameless glass balustrades have to meet the same standards as any other barrier in New Zealand — and because there's no top rail, the glass itself has to do more of the structural work. That's why frameless systems use thicker glass and engineered fixings.

• NZ Building Code clause F4 — safety from falling. Sets barrier height and the maximum gap under the barrier.
• AS/NZS 1170.1 — structural design actions. Frameless glass must resist the 1 kN/m top edge load and 0.6 kN infill point load without a handrail to share the load.
• NZS 4223 — glass performance. Frameless balustrades typically use 15mm or 19mm toughened glass to meet the load requirements.
• Laminated toughened glass may be used for added safety where a panel is at risk of falling if broken.

Frameless glass balustrades typically start from $450 per linear metre for a channel system, with spigot-fixed frameless in a similar range. The price moves with the glass thickness (15mm and 19mm cost more than 12mm), the spigot or channel spec, the number of corners, and how complex the site access is.

A straight frameless run along a flat deck is the most cost-effective layout. Curved stairs, multiple corners, or difficult access on a steep Auckland section will add to the install time and therefore the price. I'll give you a fixed quote after the measure so there are no surprises.

A wipe with glass cleaner every few months keeps it clear, and a yearly check that the spigot bolts or channel wedges are still tight is all the hardware needs. Stainless spigots in coastal spots like Castor Bay benefit from an occasional wash to keep salt off them.
