Frameless Pool Fencing Auckland

Frameless pool fencing is a pool barrier made entirely of toughened glass, held by either a slim base channel set into the paving or stainless steel spigots bolted to the pool coping. There are no vertical posts and no horizontal rail — just glass panels standing edge to edge around the pool.

This is the option I install most often for homeowners in Takapuna, Herne Bay, and around the North Shore who've invested in a pool and a landscaped garden and don't want a fence cutting the two apart. Done well, frameless glass almost disappears — you can see straight through to the water and the planting beyond.

The honest pitch for frameless pool fencing is the same as for frameless balustrades — it's the premium option, it costs more, and what you're paying for is the look. There's no frame breaking up the line of the pool surround, no posts interrupting the view, and the glass itself becomes part of the landscape rather than a barrier in front of it.

As with frameless balustrades, there are two ways to hold the glass, and the choice usually comes down to the pool surround and the look you want.

Frameless pool fencing has to meet the same barrier standards as any other pool fence in New Zealand — and because there's no top rail, the glass and the fixings have to do all the structural work. That's why frameless systems use thicker glass and engineered spigots or channels.

• Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 — requires a compliant barrier around every residential pool that can hold water to 400mm or deeper.
• NZ Building Code clause F9 — means of restricting access to residential pools. Sets the 1.2 metre minimum barrier height, 100mm maximum gap at the base, and the 1.2 metre non-climbable zone.
• AS/NZS 1170.1 — structural design actions. Frameless glass and fixings must resist wind and impact loads without a rail to share the load.
• NZS 4223 and NZS 8500 — glass performance and pool barrier safety. Frameless pool fencing typically uses 12mm or 15mm toughened glass.
• Gate requirements — self-closing, self-latching, with the latch out of reach of small children.

Frameless pool fencing is genuinely low-maintenance on the glass side — a wipe with glass cleaner keeps it clear. The gate hardware is the part that needs attention: the self-closing hinges and latch should be checked a couple of times a year to make sure they're still closing and latching properly, because that's what the council inspector will test. Spigots or channel fixings get a yearly check.
