Aluminium Pool Fencing Auckland

Aluminium pool fencing is a pool barrier built from powder-coated aluminium posts and rails, with infill that can be vertical aluminium bars, glass panels, or a combination. Unlike a frameless glass system, the aluminium frame carries the structural load, which makes the system more affordable and the glass infill (if used) thinner.

I install aluminium pool fences across Auckland — on new pools in Browns Bay and Torbay where the powder coat handles the salt air, and on alpine pools in Wanaka and Queenstown where the UV would fade a cheaper finish. It's the practical choice: compliant, durable, and built to last without the price tag of frameless glass.

Aluminium isn't the flashiest pool fence, but it's the one I recommend when a client wants a code-compliant, low-maintenance barrier at a sensible price. The powder coat comes in a range of colours, so it can be matched to the house joinery or the surrounding fencing, and it won't rust in Auckland's coastal climate.

The two most common aluminium pool fence styles I install are fin rail and tubular. Fin rail is the more modern look — slim horizontal rails with vertical bar infill — while tubular is the traditional picket style. There's also aluminium-framed glass, where powder-coated posts and rails hold glass infill panels.

Aluminium pool fencing has to meet the same barrier standards as any other pool fence in New Zealand. The advantage of an aluminium frame is that the posts and rails carry the structural load, which makes compliance straightforward — but the barrier height, gap, and non-climbable zone rules still apply.

• Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 — requires a compliant barrier around every residential pool that can hold water to 400mm or deeper.
• NZ Building Code clause F9 — means of restricting access to residential pools. Sets the 1.2 metre minimum barrier height, 100mm maximum gap at the base, and the 1.2 metre non-climbable zone.
• AS/NZS 1170.1 — structural design actions. Aluminium posts and rails engineered to resist wind and impact loads.
• AS/NZS 1664 — aluminium structures. Covers the design of aluminium members for barriers.
• NZS 8500 — pool barrier safety standard. Covers infill spacing for bars and glass.
• Gate requirements — self-closing, self-latching, with the latch out of reach of small children.

Aluminium pool fencing typically ranges from $550 to $700 per linear metre for a Fin Rail system, with Tubular aluminium pool fencing from $250 to $350 per linear metre as the most affordable option. Aluminium-framed glass is a touch higher. Self-closing, self-latching pool gates are required by code and add to the cost. The price moves with the perimeter length, the number of corners and gates, the infill choice, and the powder coat colour. Prices exclude GST.

For a straightforward rectangular pool in Remuera or a replacement fence on the North Shore, aluminium is often the smart choice — you get a code-compliant, good-looking barrier at a sensible price, and the powder coat will outlast most other finishes in Auckland's climate.

Most aluminium pool fence installs take 1 to 2 days on site, with the full timeline from quote to handover running 3 to 4 weeks.

Aluminium pool fencing is about as low-maintenance as a pool barrier gets. A wash with mild soapy water once a year keeps the powder coat clean, and a check that the post fixings are still tight is all the hardware needs. The gate hardware — self-closing hinges and latch — should be checked a couple of times a year to make sure it's still closing and latching properly, as that's what the council inspector will test.

The powder coat is warrantied against flaking and fading, and the structural install carries a workmanship warranty from me.
