Auckland
Orewa has changed a lot with the apartment developments along the beachfront, but the original beach houses are still there behind them. The apartments come to us for balcony balustrades — frameless glass to meet the fall-height requirement and keep the sea view open for every unit. The houses come to us for deck retrofits where the old timber balustrade has had enough of the salt air.
The beach at Orewa is long and flat and open, so the wind and salt move straight through. Anything we fit here takes the full coastal exposure. I treat an Orewa install the same way I treat a cliff-edge job — marine-grade everything, sealed fixings, and powder-coated aluminium where we use it.
There's no shelter on the Orewa beachfront — the sea breeze is a daily fact. So the balustrade has to be specified for it. We use 316 marine-grade stainless on every fixing, we seat the glass carefully in the channel so there's no path for salt to track in, and we powder-coat any aluminium to a coastal spec. Done this way, a glass balustrade will look good for years where a timber or cheap-metal one would already be failing.
The established homes behind the beachfront often have pools, and we fit frameless glass barriers that meet F9 and keep the pool visible from the house. For the apartments, the bathrooms are usually compact, so a frameless shower screen — hinged or sliding — is what finishes them properly without eating space.
